On Saturday 30th August, the Frankston Ladies Pennant team defeated the team from Tennis World in the Grade 5 Grand Final!
Tennis World had comfortably beaten Doncaster during the home-and-away season and after Frankston played a very close semi-final against Doncaster the week before, our girls knew they had be in top form on the day. On a beautiful Saturday morning at Kooyong, the Frankston girls brought their ‘A’ game, blitzing the nervous-looking Tennis World team with quick straight-set wins in 3 of the 4 singles matches. They then went on to also win one of the doubles matches in straight.
As the remaining singles match was in the 3rd set, the Frankston girls had won the day – even if Tennis World won the remaining matches, Frankston would be up by a set. The girls playing the remaining singles elected to complete the match, which was eventually won by Tennis World, and the other three doubles matches abandoned. The end result was a 4 rubbers to 1 win to Frankston.
As noted before, winning a pennant flag is a very rare event. To go through undefeated is even more extraodinary. The pennant flag will soon be mounted and displayed upstairs in the Ron Carter room, alongside the Mens D Special pennant flag from 1979.
Congratulations from the Frankston Tennis Club to the Grade 5 winners – (captain) Natalie Logan, Tracey Scott, Jo Evans, Jo Smith, Rhonda Cronin and Judy Jungling!
